We got this! The Feminist Hackathon focuses on the challenges that young women face in (post)pandemic Poland. We want to hack this reality, create an open space to share experiences and ideas, and pose a question on when do we really feel safe. Starting from a nationwide survey that provides us with data on the situation of women in Poland, we will launch a hackathon to imagine and design new solutions.
Young women have been marginalized on many levels, especially under the COVID-19 pandemic. First of all, they struggled with social isolation because of online classes, long-term lockdown restrictions, and the shutting down of the economy. In the home setting women more often than men experience gender-based violence. As UN Women alerted, there is a shadow pandemic of violence against girls and women going on under the COVID-19 pandemic. The second dimension of marginalization is the growing unemployment of Polish youth and economic dependency on family or intimate partners that may hinder young women’s independence and control over their life.
